Christians who hold to a high view of Scripture – that the Bible is truly God’s written word, can sometimes fall into the error of making the Bible an idol, instead of  “an altar at which we encounter the living God.”   The written word points to the Living Word, Jesus.  As the hymn writer said so eloquently, “Beyond the sacred page, I seek Thee, Lord.”

Wright, has written a classic article on understanding the authority of the Bible.  He makes the clear point that it’s really about the authority of God.  This article was made into a book length treatment called The Last Word: Scripture and the Authority of God – Beyond the Bible WarsRead the article version here.
